Plants vs. Zombies 2 Gardendless

PvZ2 Gardendless – The Free Fan-Made Plants vs. Zombies 2 PC Remaster You Need to Play

PvZ2 Gardendless is a free, fan-made tower defense game that fully rebuilds Plants vs. Zombies 2 for desktop platforms—no microtransactions, no mobile limitations, just the game as it should be. Built entirely with web technologies using the Cocos engine.
What Is PvZ2 Gardendless?

The original Plants vs. Zombies 2 launched as a mobile title and never received an official PC release. Gardendless changes that. It’s a complete rewrite of the game—not a simple port—coded from the ground up to run natively on desktop. The project is open source and hosted on GitHub, with an active community of over 18,000 members on Discord.

The core gameplay stays true to PvZ2. Players defend their home by planting a variety of plants across grid-based lanes, each with unique abilities, to stop waves of incoming zombies. What Gardendless adds on top is where things get interesting.
No Pay Walls. No Plant Leveling.

One of the biggest complaints about the original PvZ2 was the aggressive monetization—premium plants, plant leveling, and power-ups locked behind in-app purchases. Gardendless strips all of that out. Plants are earned through gameplay, and the leveling system has been removed entirely. The focus is purely on strategy.

That said, some plants are tied to specific systems. Epic Quest plants can only be unlocked by completing Epic Quests, and certain gem plants become available in the shop after reaching specific world milestones.
Worlds, Levels, and Boss Fights

Gardendless preserves the classic PvZ2 worlds, including Ancient Egypt and the Wild West. Each world contains a main set of levels followed by a Zomboss boss fight. After beating Zomboss, expansion levels unlock—these are extra challenges that don’t grant new plants, so it’s recommended to tackle them once you have a solid plant lineup.

The boss encounters in Gardendless are notably more demanding than the original. The Ancient Egypt Giant boss releases zombies in reverse lanes when defeated, forcing players to rethink their defense mid-fight. The Pirate Giant starts hurling minions across lanes once it hits half health. These aren’t just health-sponge bosses—they actively disrupt your setup.
Difficulty Settings

The game offers four difficulty tiers: A, B, C, and D, where A is the hardest and D is the easiest. The default is A, which catches a lot of new players off guard. If the game feels punishing from the start, that’s probably why. Adjusting difficulty is straightforward through the settings menu.
Sandbox Mode and Custom Levels

Beyond the main campaign, Gardendless includes a sandbox mode where players can freely spawn plants, potions, and zombies to experiment with strategies. It’s not a full-featured creative mode—core game mechanics can’t be altered here—but it’s great for testing setups before taking them into actual levels.

The game also supports community-created custom levels. Players can download and play fan-made levels from the official GitHub repository, and contributing your own is possible by submitting a pull request.
